By far the greatest gift you can give your mother to show her how much you appreciate her is your time. Spending quality time with her, sharing an experience and building memories together will be appreciated long after the chocolates have been eaten and the flowers wilted. This year why not learn a new skill together or practise an old one. Join a preserve making workshop together and create lasting memories together. To celebrate Mother’s day I am offering a Jam and Scone Making Workshop where you make both the jam and scones to serve at your own Afternoon Tea at The Yorkshire Preservatory.

In the UK Mothering Sunday falls on March 22nd 2020 this year.

Linked to the Christian festival of Lent, each year it takes place on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Overtime it has become known as Mother’s Day in the UK although historically it had nothing to do with celebrating and honouring our Mothers. Historically on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people would return to their “mother church”, the main church or cathedral in the area, for a special service. This tradition was apparently known as "going a-mothering", and became something of a holiday event, with domestic servants traditionally given the day off to visit their own families as well as their mother church. As they walked along the country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift.

The day also became known as Refreshment Sunday, Simnel Sunday - after the simnel cakes traditionally baked on the day - and Pudding Pie Sunday as the fasting rules of Lent were relaxed so people could enjoy a delicious meal together as a family. Traditionally, after church, families would tuck into a Sunday dinner of either roast lamb or veal and mother would be made Queen of the feast . It is also believed that bread was freshly baked for mothers on Mothering Sunday. Children would awake early and get the bread in the oven so mums would wake to the beautiful aroma of fresh bread.

As then, Mothering Sunday is all about spoiling your mum and making her feel happy and appreciated.
